Food Technology

Syndicate 2 have been given the opportunity to try Food Technology.
During our first session we learnt about attributes and also the different tastes we experience. (Sweet, sour, bitter and salty).
We then did a taste test on six different types of food and we had to guess what taste each food was.
You can see from some of the photos that some foods tasted better than others.

Peer Assessment Time

We have been sharing the books we made for our inquiry and giving our buddy feedback on them. We talked about two things we thought they had done well and one thing we think they could improve on.

Science

In Science this week the children loved learning about different forces. They all had a chance to stand on top of two trays of eggs and try and distribute their weight so the eggs wouldn't break.

Our New Class Members

Welcome to our new class members, Sky and Snowflake.
We purchased the budgies with the rest of the money we made from our bake sale.
The children are loving the new class members.

Exploding Rockets!

This week we had our second science lesson with Mr Roozen. We talked about reactions and had a go at creating our own mini rockets. Then we watched what happened when we used air to pressurize a water bottle with a tennis ball on top. Here are some photos of us trying to catch the ball.

Orana Park Donation

Today for our assembly we invited Paula from Orana Park, so we could present her with a cheque of 400 dollars. This was the money we raised from our bake sale and our mushrooms.
We decided that we wanted the money to go towards helping out the cheetahs and the kiwi's.

Special Visitors

Today we had a visit from some Japanese students who have been in New Zealand for the past two weeks. The students showed us how to do origami and we had great fun making planes, cranes, frogs and hats as well as lots of other things. They also showed us some Japanese toys such as juggling balls, spinning tops and a balancing ball game. They have left these games for us so if you are in school come and have a go, some of them are quite tricky!

We are scientists!

Today we had our first science lesson with Mr Roozen. we learnt all about acids and bases and what happens when we mix them together. We also had great fun making sherbert. We can't wait for our next science lesson!

Wire Art

This term we are looking the art of Alexander Calder, a famous American artist who is credited with creating the mobile.
We made our own mobiles using wire, card and string.

Liffey Cottage

The Year Three's went to visit the Liffey Cottage which is across the road from the school.
We learnt a lot if interesting facts about the cottage.

It was built in 1875.
In 1882 a butcher and his family bought it and turned the front room into a butcher shop. They had 10 children living in the cottage. Six of those children were born there.
The cottage was first located in market square and moved to its current site in 1977.

Here are some photos of the cottage

Mushroom Maths

MUSHROOM MATHS

For maths today Room's 1 & 2 are using their problem solving skills to find out what is the best option for selling our mushrooms.

Here is our problem: If we were looking at selling 8 bags of mushrooms which option would be the best?

Option 1
200gm for $3 approx 6 mushrooms

Or

Option 2
300gms for $4 approx 9 mushrooms

Stay tuned for what children came up with and how they worked it out!

Mushrooms

Meadow Mushrooms approached our school to see if we were keen to grow some mushrooms. Mrs Butcher thought Room's 1 & 2 would love the challenge. So today they arrived. Apparently they take 5 to 10 days to grow. We are looking at maybe doing some cooking with them and maybe selling some. Come and view them in our classroom.

Lincoln University

Today Syndicate 2 had a fantastic trip to Lincoln University where our knowledge about insects was tested. Ask your child if they can tell you the three parts of an insects body. How many wings an insect has? How fast a dragonfly can fly? How many species of insects there are? What the difference is between a butterfly and a moth?
